The Industrial Solutions Lab helped the Senior Design Program host another successful Expo last week on campus in Halton Arena in the Barnhardt Student Activity Center at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Over 60 completed projects were presented by second semester Senior Design students to faculty, staff, and the public. These teams were able to show the work that they have completed from their last two semesters as students in the William States Lee College of Engineering. Twenty-four teams of first semester Senior Design students were also able to present their Preliminary Design posters for the projects they plan to have completed for the Expo on December 7,2018. In addition, fifteen teams of second semester senior Civil Engineering students attended and presented their work, bringing the overall team count over 100 and making this the largest Expo to date.

While the students were presenting their projects, twelve project finalists were also being scored by a panel of independent judges to determine a winner of the Spring 2018 Expo. Finalists were chosen from a combination of academic graded submissions throughout the two semesters they worked on the project, as well as recommendations from faculty and industry supporters. This years First Place Bill Heybruck Award winner was the University Student Launch Initiative (USLI) Competition 3 team, supported by NASA and the University. Students were also required to submit a video to document their progress over the course of the project, and the winner of the Best Video Award went to the LOWES_LAWN team, whose project was a Lawnmower Blade Design and Characterization, supported by Lowe’s Home Improvement.

After such a successful Spring 2018 Expo, the Industrial Solutions Lab is already looking forward to the event in the fall. The Fall 2018 Senior Design Expo will be held on December 7, 2018.
